Why did you choose Kidderminster College and what did you like about studying here?
I chose Kidderminster College as it was close to home, and I saw that they offered the right course for me. I have really enjoyed my time at college. I have found it very enjoyable; all the staff have been friendly and knowledgeable. As a gay woman with a disability who is a mature student, it was a bit nerve-racking to start off with, as I didn’t know how the staff or other students would react to me. But I shouldn’t have worried, everyone has been great. No one has treated me any differently and I have been made to feel welcome from the start.
What has been your proudest moment or biggest achievement in terms of your education?
Being offered a job with the college has been my biggest achievement.
What advice would you give our current students/ potential students about getting into the industry?
Do it! No matter what your age. I have learnt so much from everyone at the college. The end skills you will leave with will be with you for life, and open doors for you.
What’s been your biggest challenge?
Studying again after so long out of education has been a very big challenge for me.
What does a typical day look like?
Most of the course is practical, so when we get into the workshop, we first get all the tools we need for that day’s task. This could range from fitting a kitchen to repairing a window or fitting a door, so each day is different. The class is very much a team, and we all work well together. This includes staff and students no matter what their ages. This has made going to college a joy.
