More about the course
Building on the skills you learnt during the Level 1 course, this course aims to push you further. You'll be looking at various systems within a motor vehicle and how they interact and relate to each other. Alongside the practical elements of this course, you will take a more theoretical approach to understanding the workings of vehicles and hone your skills in simple diagnostics on mechanical systems.
In the workshop, you'll remove and strip various components and look at common faults. In the classroom, you'll study multiple systems on the vehicle and how they work and interact with each other. You'll also learn about and investigate basic diagnostic techniques.
Entry requirements:
- Level 1 Motor Vehicle Repair or equivalent

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 2 Motor Vehicle Transport Maintenance Diploma.

Work experience opportunities:
During the year you will have the opportunity to go to different garages and workshops to have an insight into the daily running of a workshop.
English and Maths:
English will be embedded throughout the course so you can understand the terminology required for this course also maths will be embedded to give you a better understanding of items such as gear ratios in gearboxes and the ratio of oil viscosity.
Where can I progress?
Upon completion of this course, you can go on to study Level 3 Motor Vehicle Repair Diploma.

Tutor - Motor VehicleI have over ten years of experience teaching and delivering Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair courses. I hold a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training and a TAQA Assessor qualification. I completed my Level 3 Motorsport Maintenance and Repair course whilst working for a private vehicle sales company preparing, repairing and servicing vehicles for the sales team. I then progressed by serving as a Vehicle mechanic for the British Military during the early stages of my teaching career. I have experience delivering Motor Vehicle Level 1, 2 and 3 courses for the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and The City and Guilds. I enjoy seeing learners progress and develop skills to enter the ever-adapting Automotive industry as a mechanic.

What can I do with a qualification in Motor Vehicle?
Daily tasks:
- Repairs and services air conditioning, heating and engine-cooling systems.
- Installs additional electrical amenities such as radio/CD players, aerials.
- Checks condition of electrical/electronic systems and carries out servicing tasks.
- Diagnoses faults in electrical/electronic circuitry, removes faulty components and fits replacements.
- Carries out routine maintenance checks on oil and air filters, brakes and other vehicle parts/systems.
- Reassembles, tests, adjusts and tunes the appropriate parts, systems or entire engine.
- Removes, dismantles, repairs and replaces defective parts and prepares new parts using appropriate tools.
- Visually checks, test drives or uses test equipment to diagnose engine and mechanical faults.

- Installs and repairs interior fittings including seats, seatbelts and fascia in cars, sinks and special features in caravans and mobile shops.
- Hammers out dents in bodywork, fills in small depressions or corroded areas in solder, plastic or other filler compound and replaces body panels using hand and power tools.
- Repairs damage to chassis and engine mountings using hydraulic rams, jacks and jigs.
- Selects, cuts, shapes and assembles materials to form parts of vehicle underframe, framework and body.
- Diagnoses job requirements or ascertains work specifications from drawings or instructions.
