Our Hair and Media Make-Up - Level 2 course will help catapult you into the hair and make-up industry. You'll be trained to a high standard and gain real-life experience within the theatrical and media industry, all while being coached through a wide variety of techniques and skills essential to making it in the world of media artistry.
Throughout this qualification, you'll gain valuable skills and develop your knowledge through practical activities by working with external partners like Kidderminster Fire Service, as well as teaming up with our own Performing Art department here at the college.
The skills gained on this course will allow you to progress towards working in a diverse industry, ranging from fashion and beauty to theatre and special effects. This diploma is strong foundation for further study, and a must-have for any aspiring make-up artist's CV!
Entry requirements
- 4 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including English and maths.
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up.

How is the course taught?
- Practical workshops within our on-site salon, Elements
- Theoretical studies
- Tutorials from our award-winning staff.
The study programme runs for two days a week and includes a 60-hour mandatory work placement.
Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.
How am I assessed?
- Practical observation in a salon environment
- Written assignments
- Online examinations.
Work experience opportunities
You will be required to attend a work experience placement of at least 60 hours as part of your Hair and Media Make-Up - Level 2 qualification. Your work placement will prepare you for working in a live salon, greeting and handling clients and carrying out multiple treatments as you would in a normal working day.
You will also have opportunities to compete inĀ competitions both in-house and nationally. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase your skills and experience the competitive side of the hair and media make-up industry.
English and maths
If you are aged 16-18 and haven't achieved your GCSE grade 4/C or higher in English and maths, you will need to continue studying English and maths alongside your main programme of study.
English and maths skills are also embedded into your Hair and Media Make-Up - Level 2 course.
You will develop your English skills by learning new terminology as you develop further knowledge of anatomy and physiology. You will also develop your communication skills as you learn how to act professionally.
You will develop your maths skills by learning how to organise your time to carry out treatments in good time. You will also learn new mixing ratios for chemical products and how to handle payments on reception.
Where can I progress?
Upon completion of this course, you can go on to study Level 3 Hairdressing or Level 3 Beauty Therapy here at Kidderminster College.

What can I do with a qualification in Hair and Media Make-Up?
Daily tasks:
- Ensures financial accounts for the business are maintained.
- Demonstrates, advises on and sells hair and/or beauty products.
- Checks and maintains any equipment, and ensures that all safety requirements are met.
- Undertakes and/or directs hair treatments and/or beauty therapy.
- Ensures clients.
- Provides clients with information and advice on styles and treatments, and resolves any complaints or problems.

- Combs, brushes, blow-dries or sets wet hair in rollers to style or straighten.
