Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship

• GCSE at grade 3 (D) or above, or equivalent in maths and English

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will achieve a Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery qualification.

This is a core and options apprenticeship with two pathways

• Pathway 1: A Site Carpenter will normally work on a construction site, or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and fixing building components, from the initial erection of a new building through to the installation of all necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as a range of repair and maintenance activities.
• Pathway 2: An Architectural Joiner will normally be employed in a workshop producing timber-based building components and other architectural products, such as doors, windows, units, and staircases, which are then transported to construction sites to be installed by site carpenters.

You must meet the requirements of an end-point assessment in order to be deemed competent in your job role.

Once you have completed all elements of your apprenticeship, you will enter the gateway and get ready to take your end-point assessment. The end-point assessment consists of a Knowledge Assessment (short written test), a Practical Skills Assessment (skills test) and an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

On completion of this standard, you may progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry and Joinery or secure employment as a Site Carpenter or Architectural Joiner.

The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Skilled Worker’ standard which is widely accepted in the sector as a ‘licence to operate’ in a skilled construction trade.

You will be employed as a regular employee on a contract of employment for at least 30 hours per week and paid at least the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice, currently £5.28 per hour. Employers can pay the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice for the first year of the apprenticeship. After this first year, the salary rate will change to the National Minimum Wage for your age.
