Autocare Technician Apprenticeship

As an Autocare Technician apprentice, you will carry out a range of services and repairs to cars, car-derived vans, and light goods vehicles. You will be working in an Autocare or “Fast-Fit” Centre, which may be part of a national chain or operated by a regional/local independent group/owner.
A minimum of 20% of your contracted hours must be spent in off-the-job training. This is predominantly done one day per week at college but can also include training sessions.
Entry requirements:
- GCSE at grade 3 or above, or equivalent in maths and English
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will achieve a Level 2 Autocare Technician qualification.
What will I learn?
Develop your expertise in the technical elements of the role and have a good grasp of the practical and theoretical aspects of the vehicle systems that are serviced
Develop excellent telephone manners, customer service, and effective sales skills
Improve on your problem-solving and self-organisation skills

You must meet the requirements of an end-point assessment in order to be deemed competent in your job role.
How am I assessed?
Once you have completed all elements of your apprenticeship, you will enter the gateway and get ready to take your end-point assessment. The end-point assessment consists of knowledge assessments, a practical observation, and a professional review.
Where can I progress?
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be eligible to apply for IMI membership as a Registered Young Professional or, if you wish, as an Associate Member. You would also gain entry into the IMI Professional Register.
Apprenticeship pay:
You will be employed as a regular employee on a contract of employment for at least 30 hours per week and paid at least the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice, currently £5.28 per hour. If you are over 19, employers can pay the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice for the first year of the apprenticeship. After this first year, the salary rate will change to the National Minimum Wage for your age.

I hold a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training and a TAQA Assessor qualification. I completed my Level 3 Motorsport Maintenance and Repair course whilst working for a private vehicle sales company preparing, repairing and servicing vehicles for the sales team. I then progressed by serving as a Vehicle mechanic for the British Military during the early stages of my teaching career. I have experience delivering Motor Vehicle Level 1, 2 and 3 courses for the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and The City and Guilds. I enjoy seeing learners progress and develop skills to enter the ever-adapting Automotive industry as a mechanic.

Green Technology Centre ManagerAs a dedicated Site Manager, I oversee the centre's daily operations and support learners in their journey toward achieving their qualifications. My responsibilities include managing four departments: Motor Vehicle, Vehicle Respraying, Bricklaying, and Property Maintenance Operations, offering qualifications ranging from Level 1 to Level 3, as well as apprenticeship programs in these areas. With a background as a fully qualified motor mechanic and vehicle respraying tutor for eight years, I bring hands-on expertise to my role in management.

What can I do with a qualification in Autocare Technician?
Daily tasks:
- Repairs and services air conditioning, heating and engine-cooling systems.
- Installs additional electrical amenities such as radio/CD players, aerials.
- Checks condition of electrical/electronic systems and carries out servicing tasks.
- Diagnoses faults in electrical/electronic circuitry, removes faulty components and fits replacements.
- Carries out routine maintenance checks on oil and air filters, brakes and other vehicle parts/systems.
- Reassembles, tests, adjusts and tunes the appropriate parts, systems or entire engine.
- Removes, dismantles, repairs and replaces defective parts and prepares new parts using appropriate tools.
- Visually checks, test drives or uses test equipment to diagnose engine and mechanical faults.

- Installs and repairs interior fittings including seats, seatbelts and fascia in cars, sinks and special features in caravans and mobile shops.

- Repairs damage to chassis and engine mountings using hydraulic rams, jacks and jigs.
- Selects, cuts, shapes and assembles materials to form parts of vehicle underframe, framework and body.
- Diagnoses job requirements or ascertains work specifications from drawings or instructions.
