Do you have a passion for making people feel amazing about themselves? Then this Beauty Therapy Level 1 course could be for you! This hands-on, entry-level qualification has been designed to introduce you to many practical beauty therapy skills.
You'll study a diverse range of units and techniques throughout the year to help you learn the ropes quickly. Covering the basics right up to more advanced procedures and treatments, the skills taught on this course will lay down a strong foundation for your future career.
Working from our award-winning salon, Elements, you'll get invaluable, real-life work experience, helping you develop your confidence and customer care skills, while also getting a taste of the career you're stepping onto. Working independently and as part of a close-knit team, our Beauty Therapy course will see you share your knowledge as it develops, preparing you for whatever career path you decide to take.
Entry requirements
There are no formal requirements for this course. However, candidates should have:
- an artistic flair
- excellent people skills.
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 1 Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

The course is run for 16 hours per week, spread across three days each week.
Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.
How am I assessed?
- Practical observation in a salon environment
- Written assignments
- Online examinations throughout the course period.
Work experience opportunities
You will be required to attend a work experience placement of at least 60 hours as part of your Level 1 Beauty Therapy qualification. This will help you prepare you for working in the industry. You will also have opportunities to compete in competitions in-college and around the country which will give you the experience of working competitively.
English and maths
If you are aged 16-18 and you haven't already achieved GCSE grade 4/C or above, then you will need to continue studying English and maths during your time at Kidderminster College.
English and maths are also embedded into your Beauty Therapy course. You will develop your English skills by learning new terminology and how to communicate effectively and professionally with clients. You will develop your maths skills by learning how to time your treatments, mixing ratios of products and through your work on reception handling payments.

Upon completion of this course, you can go on to study courses in Beauty Therapy - Level 2 or Hair and Media Make-Up - Level 2 at Kidderminster College.

What can I do with a qualification in Beauty Therapy?
Daily tasks:
- Ensures financial accounts for the business are maintained.
- Demonstrates, advises on and sells hair and/or beauty products.
- Checks and maintains any equipment, and ensures that all safety requirements are met.
- Undertakes and/or directs hair treatments and/or beauty therapy.
- Ensures clients.
- Provides clients with information and advice on styles and treatments, and resolves any complaints or problems.
- Controls the allocation, training and remuneration of staff.
- Determines staffing, financial, material and other short- and long-term needs.

- Demonstrates, sells and recommends hair care products to clients and advises them on hair care.
- Ensures hair products are stored and used appropriately and observes relevant health and safety factors.
- Maintains client records and keeps up-to-date with new products, styles and techniques.
- Collects payment, arranges appointments and cleans and tidies salon.
- Shaves and trims beards and moustaches.
- Combs, brushes, blow-dries or sets wet hair in rollers to style or straighten.
- Cuts and trims hair using scissors, clippers, razor and comb.
- Washes, conditions, bleaches, tints or dyes hair and provides any necessary basic scalp treatments.
- Discusses customer requirements, analyses hair condition and other relevant features to define and advise on hair style.
